What is Extremism?

This workshop gives students the opportunity to explore what we mean by the word
‘extremism’ and consider their own, and other’s views, about what is extreme behaviour or an
extreme opinion. Students will be presented with a range of real-life examples, on both the left
and right of the political spectrum, that have recently been considered extremist and will test
them against the government’s new definition of extremism. Students will then consider whether they agree with the government’s definition and, if not, discuss how they would define extremism.

The learning objectives are to:
– Understand the government definition of extremism
– Explore the balance between our right to freedom of expression and belief and our right
to protest, with the right of all citizens to feel safe and be protected from hate and
violence
– Consider their own view, and the views of others, on what constitutes ‘extremism’
