SINCE 9/11 Responds to Bondi Beach Terror Attack

SINCE 9/11 extends its deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by the terrorist attack that took place in the Bondi Beach area of Sydney in December. Australian authorities designated the incident as an Islamist-inspired terrorist attack. The violence resulted in loss of life and serious injuries, and was directed at Jewish people, sending shockwaves through Australia and Jewish communities worldwide.

The attack occurred on a date of particular significance for the Jewish community, compounding the harm and fear experienced by those targeted. This reflects a well-established pattern in extremist violence, in which antisemitism is used as a core ideology and attacks are timed to exploit religious and cultural moments in order to maximise intimidation and division.

This tragedy is a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of extremist ideologies and of the urgent need to confront antisemitism, hatred and violent extremism through education and early intervention. Supporting young people to understand how extremist narratives target identity, exploit grievance and misinformation, and normalise violence is essential to prevention.

At SINCE 9/11, we remain committed to supporting educators and young people to understand the causes and consequences of terrorism, to challenge hate in all its forms, and to build empathy, critical thinking and social cohesion. Our thoughts are with all those affected.
