Project Strong: Building Respect, Staying Safe, and Challenging Harmful Extremist Influences

SINCE 9/11 are delighted to have received funding from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, managed by the London Community Foundation, to enable us to pilot an innovative approach to building young people’s resilience to extremism and radicalisation.

In today’s digital world, young people are growing up exposed to an overflowing amount of information. Whether this be from social media, when going online or from peers – the amount of fake or problematic news has become a problem. This exposure to extreme, harmful and radicalising content online has become a growing concern, especially for young people who sit outside mainstream education. Students in alternative education systems such as Pupil Referral Units, SEMH and SEND schools, Further Education settings, and secure provisions often face unique challenges that leave them more vulnerable to this manipulation and misinformation.

In response to these challenges, we have created Project Strong.

Project Strong is an educational programme designed for young people between the ages of 13 to 24, especially those who are in alternative learning environments which are often overlooked. Between March and September, the project aims to engage approximately 50 young people using a flexible digital workbook, enabling them to meet the learning outcomes of a newly developed AQA unit award entitled ‘Building Respect, Staying Safe, and Challenging Harmful Extremist Influences’ at Level 1.

The goal of Project Strong goes far beyond delivering information. By combining technology with thoughtful, tailored content, we aim to:

  • Build resilience against extremist narratives
  • Increase awareness of online risks and exposure
  • Strengthen critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Provide young people with recognised achievements that support their future
  • Empower educators to tackle sensitive topics safely and effectively

Ultimately, the project aims to make a real difference with young people who are often overlooked, giving them the tools, confidence, and understanding needed to navigate both online and offline challenges in today’s world.
