Each year on 21 August, the world pauses to observe the UN International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. This year, the day holds a uniquely profound significance for us here in the UK, as we stand in solidarity to mark the inaugural National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism.
At SINCE 9/11, our mission has always been to build a legacy of hope from the devastating tragedy of September 11th, 2001. We know that the ripple effects of terrorism do not end when the immediate crisis fades. For survivors, families, and communities, the impact is lifelong. This annual day of remembrance is a powerful reminder that their stories must be amplified, their endurance honoured, and their needs fully supported.
Turning Tragedy into Learning
We believe the most definitive way to counter violent extremism is through knowledge, dialogue, and critical thinking. Terrorism thrives on division, fear, and misinformation. By contrast, education fosters empathy and building a more cohesive society.
Our FREE Education Programme is designed to do exactly that. We give teachers the tools and confidence to bring these complex topics into UK classrooms safely and constructively.
When we teach the events, causes, and consequences of 9/11 and subsequent global attacks, we are not just teaching history. We are empowering a new generation of young people—most of whom were not even born when the Twin Towers fell—to recognise harmful extremist influences, challenge hatred, and reject radicalisation.
Amplifying Voices, Expanding Support
The introduction of a dedicated UK national day—sparked by the relentless campaigning of British survivors and families—is a vital milestone. Rotating to different locations across the UK each year, it highlights that no community stands alone against fear.
Beyond remembrance, this day serves an urgent practical purpose: encouraging survivors to access specialist trauma support and mental health care. True resilience requires a network of unwavering support, and we applaud the steps being taken to ensure that those affected by terrorism have their voices centred in how our nation remembers.
Our Shared Commitment
This August, we invite you to join us in a shared commitment:
- Listen: Take the time to read and absorb the testimonies of survivors.
- Learn: Explore our Terrorism Timeline and educational resources to understand how we can collectively build a more peaceful future.
- Act: Challenge intolerance, foster inclusive conversations, and cultivate respect in your local communities.
Terrorism aims to fracture us, but our collective resolve and commitment to education ensure that hope, respect, and unity will always triumph.
