The starfish parable (KS3)

Parable of the starfish thrower to consider hopeful and cynical perspectives on small acts of kindness.

An extended resource that enables pupils to explore the parable of the starfish thrower and to critically consider why people do/do not help in various scenarios. 

Learning objectives:

• Explore how individual actions create impact
• Analyse attitudes that prevent people from helping
• Reflect on personal responsibility in a community
• Commit to meaningful acts of kindness or service

Tip: Run this as one continuous session or break up into two mini sessions – (1) reading, listening and discussing the story and (2) use worksheets to create a beach poster.  Use during PSHE, assembly or form/tutor time.
