Twenty-five years ago, the world changed forever.
On 11 September 2001, the attacks on the United States claimed thousands of innocent lives and left a lasting mark on communities everywhere around the world. For many, this day remains a vivid memory – where they were, whether they were watching the news or in New York, who they were with, and how they felt as they watched this devastating act unfold.
Now, a quarter of a century later, a whole new generation is growing up with many unaware of the events, causes and consequences of the September 11th attacks. For today’s young people it is important that they learn about the events of the day and the impact it had to ensure it remains a moment from which we understand and learn.
Every anniversary that passes of 9/11 is a chance to remember the lives that were taken that day, the families who were changed forever, and the acts of courage and compassion that followed.
2977 people were murdered that day and behind the numbers are individuals who were living ordinary lives. They were parents, children, colleagues, friends and neighbours – just like you and me.
The legacy of 9/11 is not defined only by the tragedy itself, but by the response that followed. Communities coming together, acts of extraordinary kindness, and a collective determination to support one another through the darkest moments.
Our charity’s mission is to ensure that the legacy of 9/11 is one of hope, and a commitment to building a more peaceful and cohesive society. And we are proud to continue making sure these lessons are taught to young people.
The challenge today is ensuring that the lessons and memories of 9/11 are carried forward responsibly. In a world where disinformation and conspiracy theories spread quickly, it is vital that we help young people understand the facts, honour those who were affected, and preserve the importance of remembering this moment in history.
This is why SINCE 9/11 works with schools across the UK to help young people explore the events, causes and consequences of 9/11. Our education programme encourages students to ask questions, think critically and have meaningful conversations about extremism, division and the importance of mutual respect.
After all, the classroom is where the future is shaped.
As we mark this significant anniversary, we invite everyone to reflect on the lessons of the past and consider the role we all play in shaping tomorrow.
Because the legacy of 9/11 should not only be about what we remember.
