What’s the harm? How conspiracy theories shape beliefs (KS4)

Designed to support meaningful classroom discussion and critical thinking, this resource helps students identify mis and disinformation, understand why conspiracy theories spread (including those about 9/11) and to use fact-checking tools to evaluate sources.

Learning Objective: To explain how online content can influence us and encourage extreme views, to recognise signs that suggest online content might be misleading, and to understand ways to respond to extreme online content and where to seek support.

Aligned to the 2026 statutory RSHE guidance on Online Safety and Awareness and Wellbeing Online, the resources include comprehensive teacher guidance, lesson slides, student handouts, case studies, reflection activities and homework tasks.

There is also a news article (level 2) about 9/11 conspiracy theories for students to read: https://theday.co.uk/wild-theories-distort-9-11/

This lesson was created in partnership with The Day, which offers 30+ news-led PSHE and Citizenship lessons, alongside daily current affairs content for schools.
